It identifies the planet that all human beings inhabit, whose life-support systems we share, and whose common affairs require democratic governance.

The choice also connects Earth Citizenship directly to the initiative’s institutional vision: Earth Constitution, Earth Parliament and Earth Government.

Another reason for choosing Earth is that the word has a direct equivalent in languages across the world. While the English term global citizenship is widely used, Earth Citizenship connects more naturally to how people name the planet in their own languages. This gives the concept a more grounded and universally translatable identity, which is also reflected in the United Earth logo concept.

From an ideal to a constitutional reality

Global citizenship is often understood as an identity, an ethical commitment or a form of global awareness and responsibility.

The United Earth initiative, however, gives Earth Citizenship a specific constitutional meaning: the civic and democratic status of every human being within a global democratic state. Many people already identify as global or Earth citizens, but in United Earth’s proposal, that identity is not what grants the status. Earth Citizenship belongs to every human being regardless of how they identify, in keeping with GOV//ID: the principle that public governance must remain distinct from all collective identities.

To work towards this goal, the initiative establishes proto-Earth Citizenship (ECp) as an organisational status and develops AGORA as a platform for global democratic participation.

The intended progression is ECp → EC, culminating in a global referendum on the proposed constitutional order.

This is United Earth’s particular contribution to the wider idea of global citizenship: a practical strategy for turning an established ideal into a democratic political reality.

Learn more about this process, what claiming ECp means, and how you can participate:

Explore Earth Citizenship

Initiative | Organisation | Development | Operations | Website Earth Citizenship | Participation principles | Privacy Policy | Donation terms | Contact Why “Earth Citizenship”?
