Earth Citizenship

Earth Citizenship (EC) is the civic foundation of the global democratic community that the United Earth initiative is working to build.

Global citizenship in global democracy

The idea of global citizenship has a long history and many advocates. The United Earth initiative uses the term Earth Citizenship (EC) for its proposed constitutional realisation: that every human being should have civic and democratic rights within a global democratic state. The name deliberately emphasises Earth, rather than the more generic terms world or global.

To make EC a constitutional reality, the United Earth initiative is building an organisation to mobilise worldwide support. To advance this goal, it introduces proto-Earth Citizenship (ECp): initially a symbolic status within the organisation, but one that will gradually acquire more of the democratic capacities envisioned for EC as the initiative develops AGORA, its global platform for direct democratic participation.

ECp → EC

This is the central idea: to build a functioning global democratic community that can progressively develop into a global democratic political order.

ECp is already a real organisational status. As the community grows, AGORA will provide increasing opportunities to participate in developing, testing and practising global democracy.

The intended transition from ECp to constitutional EC will ultimately be decided through a global referendum, once a sufficiently broad global civic community has been established.

Claiming ECp as an expression of support for EC

Every human being already belongs to Earth. What is missing is a democratic political order that recognises this shared citizenship.

Claiming ECp expresses support for establishing Earth Parliament and making EC a constitutional reality. It does not imply approval of the United Earth initiative’s wider proposals, a future Earth Constitution or any particular policy. Before Earth Parliament is established, this support can be withdrawn.

ECp is not a passport, an identity document or a legal citizenship status. It is a way to participate in building the institutions through which EC could become reality.

Participation is governed by United Earth’s [Participation Principles] and the rules designed to protect the integrity of its developing democratic community.

A phased launch

ECp registration and AGORA are still being developed. Before they can open to everyone, stronger safeguards for privacy, identity and age verification are needed, particularly to protect children and young people, along with the organisational capacity to run them.

During this initial phase, ECp is granted to verified adults aged 18 or older who take on voluntary roles, helping to shape a respectful and constructive culture within AGORA, build the global node network, and assist in verifying new participants.

Supporting our fundraising campaigns helps open ECp to everyone sooner.
